Scope & Ambition

Research shows that bringing half of all tropical forests under the control of Indigenous Peoples and local communities requires at least US$10 billion by 2030. CLARIFI aims to help raise $USD 10 billion between 2022-2030 by working with RRI’s Path to Scale network of donors and climate/conservation funding initiatives. It has three key objectives:

1

Help protect at least 30% of the planet by adding 400 million hectares to Indigenous Peoples’, Afro-descendant Peoples’, and local communities’ legally recognized territories.

2

Reduce deforestation to help reach the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

3

Increase these communities’ legal land ownership to at least 50% of all tropical forests.

CLARIFI’s Projects

In 2022, CLARIFI piloted its first grant making cycle, with a commitment to adhering to the initiative’s guiding principles and improving its pipeline development and grantmaking process based on lessons learned. So far, CLARIFI has:

88

Where We Work

Funding Process

Project sourcing is a two-step process whereby potential partners submit an idea concept before developing a full proposal. Idea concepts are accepted on an ongoing basis and in multiple formats (written, audiovisual or other):

  • The CLARIFI team takes an active scouting approach that leverages existing networks to identify relevant opportunities and activities aligned with the CLARIFI thematic priorities.
  • The CLARIFI technical team conducts a preliminary review of ideas elevated by the scouting team and identifies projects that align with CLARIFI goals and that it can help to further develop.
  • If the opportunity meets the basic requirements of a CLARIFI project, the CLARIFI technical team supports the local organization to complete a Concept Note Template that lists the information required for a proposal to be considered and evaluated in detail.
  • The CLARIFI Steering Committee, supported by an independent review, conducts a final evaluation of the completed Concept Note proposal.
  • CLARIFI-funded activities must adhere to the same contractual process, financial management, accounting, and reporting standards as all RRI projects.
  • Progress is monitored on an ongoing basis to quickly respond to emerging opportunities or challenges.
